How I Learned to Relax (And Quit Freaking Out My Dog!)

It may sound a little hippy dippy, but it’s important to have a calm, positive mindset and energy around your dog.  A little gratitude and chill vibe can go a long way when you’re dealing with an animal who thinks like a toddler!

Dogs are incredibly perceptive creatures. They pick up on our emotions, body language, and energy levels more than we often realize. This is why staying calm and happy around your dog is one of the most important things you can do as an owner. Whether you’re training, dealing with behavioral issues, or simply going about your daily routine, your emotional state directly impacts your dog’s well-being and response.

Why Calmness Matters

  1. Encourages Trust and Security
Dogs look to their owners for guidance and reassurance. If you remain calm in different situations, your dog will learn to trust you as a steady and reliable leader. This helps reduce anxiety and builds a stronger bond between you and your pet.
  2. Improves Training Success
Training a dog requires patience and consistency. If you’re frustrated or anxious, your dog may sense it and become stressed or confused, making learning more difficult. A calm approach promotes better focus and helps your dog feel safe while learning new commands and behaviors.
  3. Reduces Stress and Anxiety
Dogs are sensitive to human emotions. If you’re agitated, they may mirror your stress, leading to anxious behaviors such as barking, pacing, or destructive tendencies. Remaining calm can help prevent unnecessary stress and promote a peaceful home environment.
  4. Aids in Handling Difficult Situations
Whether it’s a vet visit, an encounter with another dog, or a loud thunderstorm, your dog’s reaction often depends on how you handle the situation. If you remain composed and reassuring, your dog is more likely to stay relaxed as well.

Tips for How to Stay Calm Around Your Dog

  • Practice Deep Breathing: If you feel yourself getting frustrated, take a few deep breaths before responding to your dog’s behavior.
  • Use a Gentle Voice: Speaking in a soft, even tone can help soothe your dog and prevent unnecessary excitement or fear.
  • Maintain Steady Movements: Avoid sudden, jerky motions, as these can startle your dog and make them uneasy.
  • Be Patient: Remember that dogs learn at their own pace. Consistency and calm reinforcement will yield better results over time.
  • Set the Tone for Your Home: A relaxed household fosters a relaxed dog. Create a peaceful environment by managing noise levels and maintaining a positive atmosphere.
  • Celebrate Success Capturing the desired behaviors from your calm creatures deserves a reward! We can get excited for our pups and bring it back to quiet contentment too!

By making a conscious effort to stay calm and keeping a bright attitude, you create a nurturing and stable environment for your dog. Your pet will feel safer, be more responsive to training, and ultimately develop a deeper trust in you. In return, you’ll enjoy a more harmonious and rewarding relationship with your four-legged friend!
