Preparing for a Dog Training Class: What to Expect

Starting your dog training journey can be exciting and a bit nerve-wracking! Whether you’re a first time dog owner or this isn’t your first rodeo, preparing for a training class can set you and your pup up for success. Here’s what you can expect and how to make the most out of your training experience.

What to Bring

  1. Leash and Collar/Harness: Ensure you have a 4-6 ft sturdy leash and a comfortable collar or harness. Opt for a front clip harness if your dog tends to pull, as it provides better control and comfort.
  2. Treats: Bring plenty of low, medium, and high-value treats to reward your pup during training. Look for a variety of small treats, as this will help keep your dog motivated and not too full!
  3. Treat Pouch: A treat pouch is a game-changer for training classes. It keeps your treats accessible and allows for quick rewards during exercises. We are big fans of the common fanny pack at Good Dog, DYNO!

How to Prepare

  1. Socialize Your Dog: If your dog is shy or reactive, consider some socialization beforehand. Introduce them to different dogs and people to help them adapt to the class setting.
  2. Get Familiar with Class Structure: Under the “Our Services” drop down menu on our website, you’ll find an option to view what each of our group classes offer. Understanding how the class is organized can ease anxiety. Some classes may begin with hands-on training exercises and dive right in, while others have a humans-only orientation week that will help prepare you to be successful, and knowing what to expect can help both you and your dog feel more comfortable!
  3. Keep Your Dog’s State of Comfort in Mind: Ensure your dog is well-rested and not overly stimulated before class. A calm dog is more likely to focus and engage in training!

Setting Realistic Goals

  1. Identify What You Want to Achieve: Identify specific skills or behaviors you’d like to work on, such as leash manners, impulse control, or socialization. Setting clear goals gives you a roadmap for your training journey.
  2. Be Patient with Progress: Remember that every dog learns at their own pace. Celebrate small victories and understand that setbacks are normal. Training is a marathon, not a sprint!
  3. Focus on Your Bond: Ultimately, training is about strengthening the relationship between you and your dog. Enjoy the process and use it as an opportunity to build trust and communication.
  4. Communicate with Your Instructor: If you have specific concerns or goals, don’t hesitate to discuss them with your Lead Trainer. They can provide tailored advice to suit your needs.

Conclusion

Preparing for a dog training class is all about setting yourself and your dog up for success. By bringing the right supplies, getting your dog ready, and establishing realistic goals, you can maximize your training experience. Remember to stay positive, enjoy the process, and celebrate every step forward. With a little preparation and patience, you and your dog will embark on a rewarding training journey together!
